Holidays are for relaxation, so I decided that I would take a nap. Not a quick nap on the couch, but a real nap in my bed complete with pjs and drawn blinds. I was pretty tired. It was 3:25.
At 3:40, my bed started moving. Normally I would say "If the bed's a rockin' don't come a knockin'", but it was just me in my bed. Alone. And, I wouldn't normally say that.
It started out gentle at first. I thought to myself "Hmm. I think this could be an earthquake." I almost didn't even sit up because I was that sleepy. But then it got worse. It started rumbling louder. I could actually hear out my window how the earth was groaning. I sat up in the middle of my bed and grabbed a pillow in case I needed to hold it over my head. It was getting worse still.
I can't explain what an odd sensation it is to have everything moving. You want to call out to have someone stop, as if it's just a prank. Or, it's like when you were a kid at the school fair and you want the high school dropout to stop the rickety old carnival ride so you can get off because it's just really not as fun as it had looked and you're not ready to die.
It seemed to last a really long time. I could hear the dishes in my cabinet clinking and then I heard a few things fall off my bookshelf. I decided to call my Mom and let her know what was going on, just in case she could do anything from St. Louis. The call went something like this:
Mom: "Hello sweetie, how are you?"
Me: "Um.... uhh we're having an earthquake!"
Mom: ::to my Dad:: "She said they just had an earthquake!"
Me: "No, I said we're having one right now!"
Mom: "You're what sweetie? How big was the earthquake?"
Me: "I don't know! It's still happening! Like right now... my room is rolling back and forth."
Mom: "Oh goodness! Do you think you should go outside?"
Me: "I would if I wasn't wearing pjs in the middle of the afternoon!"
I think the earthquake was Jesus' way of saying he didn't appreciate the Jonas Brothers performing in Saddleback's Easter Service. They are so 2008.
Here's a fitting cartoon from XKCD.
